It is beginning to look a lot like Mardi Gras here in Jefferson Texas

March 2nd, 2011 by carriagehouse

Mardi Gras Amusement Rides

You can’t help but notice as your drive around town this week that Jefferson is beginning to gear up for some thing really big.  There is a feel and impression of busy preparation everywhere you go.  Vendors are beginning to set up down at the bayou and trash cans are being set up all over town.  Street cleaners are out vacuuming the streets and the Sysco and beer trucks seem to be everywhere.  It is beginning to feel a lot like Mardi Gras…everywhere you go.

Last night, Tom and I went to Auntie Skinners for dinner.  It was Tuesday night steak night after all.  We had the opportunity to sit down with some of the folks on the Krewe of Hebeand talk to them about all of the Mardi Gras planning that is being finished up these last few days.  I am not sure that these people are going to get any sleep between now and Sunday night.  There has been a phenomenal amount of work that has already been done but now it is crunch time and so much has to be finished up in the few days leading up to the big party.

Myself, I am going to the grocery store today and will begin my food prep for this weekend.  My plan is to prepare as much as possible in advance and have it waiting for the weekend in the freezer.  I am also planning on making a King Cake for the guests that are staying here.  We will have it sitting out on the front porch for everyone to enjoy.  So as you can tell there is a ton of work and busy preparation going on here at the Carriage House as well.

Tom and I made a quick trip back to Dallas first part of this week so that we could make a presentation about our Photography Weekends to the Plano Photography Club.  I went into a little bit of a culture shock.  No one had a Mardi Gras tree up.  There were no ads or billboards for King Cakes.  There were no beads for sale in the stores.  It is almost as if Mardi Gras doesn’t exist outside of this little New Orleans influenced bubble that I  live in.

If you are planning on coming out for the Mardi Gras Upriver celebrations this weekend, you will need to plan a day trip or look for a hotel room in Marshall.  All of the hotels, motels and Bed & Breakfast in Jefferson are completely full.  I  have also heard that all of the lodging in Uncertain is full as well.  We will open up our calendar for reservations for next year’s Mardi Gras this coming Monday, March 7th.  You can call us at 903-665-9511 to make your reservation.

November Events in Jefferson, Texas

October 29th, 2010 by carriagehouse

Autumn on Caddo Lake

Autumn on Caddo Lake

The temps are starting to fall and the leaves are changing color.  East Texas is at it’s most glorious during the month of November.  It is a perfect time of year to come to Jefferson and get that rest and relaxation that you need so badly before the hectic Christmas season hits.

There is so much to do in November!

The first weekend of the month kicks off with a paranormal conference called History, Haunts, and Legends (11/06).  This all day conference will feature speakers on all things that go bump in the night.  Come on down and enjoy hearing about paranormal research and what life is like in a real life haunted house.

The following weekend is Trammel’s Trace Rendevous (11/12-11/14).   This will be a weekend of re-enactments of life back in the 1840s.  Mountain men, Trappers and Indians meet on the banks of the Big Cypress Bayou to swap goods, tell stories and celebrate survival of another season.  This event is perfect for the whole family and is not only educational but is also a whole lot of fun.

That very same weekend, the 5th Annual Books Alive Christian & Inspirational Book Festival (11/12 -11/14) will be held at the Methodist Church.  Several amazing authors will be there to talk about their inspirational stories and books.  All proceeds from this movingweekend will benefit the First United Methodist Church here in Jefferson.

The weekend of November 19th is our 2010 Fall Photography Weekend.  This adventure weekend is perfect for photographers of all skill levels, experience, and equipment.  Come join us as we take photo walks through the beautiful Historic Riverfront District and sunset boat tours of some amazing wildlife photography.

The weekend after Thanksgiving is the kick off of the Christmas Season here in Jefferson.  The weekend activities include  a Christmas parade, the annual tree lighting ceremony, bargain galores at the merchant’s open house, and the Queen Mab ball at Auntie Skinners.

So before things get too crazy for the Christmas Season, give yourself the treat of a vacation.  Come on down to Jefferson for some fun and decompression.  Call us for your room reservations at 903-665-9511.

Things to Do in Jefferson in July

July 6th, 2010 by Skyla Grimes

We had a fantastic July 4th weekend here in Jefferson. There is no better place to experience Independence Day in small town America then here in Jefferson. We had a children’s’ bicycle parade, a pie and cake auction, a duck race, bands, and of course fireworks…lots of fireworks. If you would like to see some fantastic pictures of the celebration, then please go to our Facebook page.
Now that the holiday is behind us, we can look forward to some other fun stuff happening in July.
The Graceful Ghost Steamboat is back in the water after passing it’s Coast Guard inspection. Now you can enjoy the ethereal beauty of Caddo Lake from the majesty of an old fashioned steamboat. Tours are Tuesday through Saturday at 10am, 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm.
The 22nd annual Jefferson Heritage Triathlon is Sunday, July 18th. Packet pick-up, carbo feed and the pre-race entertainment will be on Saturday July 17th in the Russell building on Austin Street. The race will be ran at the beautiful Lake O’ the Pines, just 10 miles west of historic downtown Jefferson, Texas and the Carriage House. The Race is a 1/2 mile swim – out & back on a triangular course, then…25K bike ride -(“dam road” takes on a whole new meaning) closed course on some rolling rural roads and a 5K run on a flat & shady park road to the finish.
If you are a talented performer then Auntie Skinners is the place to be in July. The Auntie Skinners Has Talent Amateur Singing Contest will be taking place July 8th and 15th with the semi-finals on July 23rd and the finals on July 30th. Even if you cannot sing this contest will be a ton of fun to watch. For more information call Auntie Skinners at 903-665-71721.
Another cool thing going on at Auntie Skinners is the Toga party on August 7th. The band 8-Track will be playing that night and I am certain that it will be a huge time. I will post more information on the Toga Party as I get it.

It’s Jumpin’ in Jefferson

March 23rd, 2010 by Skyla Grimes

Spring has finally sprung! Yeah! I for one am tired of snow and the cold. After the coldest winter in 33 years, I feel like we have earned the right of a spectacular spring.

Besides all of the beautiful flowers that are starting to bloom, there are other signs of renewal. One of them being all of the festivals going on here in Jefferson. I don’t know if you have taken a peek at the Calendar of Events…wow! It is good to come out of hibernation.

Easter Weekend – Truly a weekend that has something for everyone. The citywide rummage sale will be going on. There is no better way to find that little something that you have been looking for. The Historic Jefferson Railway will be hosting the Easter Egg Express complete with an Easter Egg hunt and Easter Train. No weekend would be complete without live entertainment at Auntie Skinners. Wes Jeans will be playing a couple of sets on Saturday night.

4/9 – 4/10 – It is National Library Week and the Historic Jefferson Railway will be celebrating by giving a 10% discount to everyone who donates a book. The semi-annual paranormal conference, History, Haunts and Legends will be on Saturday. It is sure to be a spooky good time! If you are hungry after all of this, then the Marion County Chamber of Commerce will be putting on the 4th Annual Crawfish Boil on the Bayou. It will be good food, good music and good suds.

4/16 – 4/18 – The 10th Annual Outlaw Nationals Rod Run & Antique Car Show and the 8th Annual Diamond Don’s Riverport National Vintage Motocross makes this one of the year’s premier events here in Jefferson. There are only a few rooms left in the entire town so make reservations now.

4/23 – 4/24 – Do you love the Gone with the Wind movie and everything that goes with it. This weekend we will be celebrating the Tara in Texas festival. Bonnie Blue Butler will be the Guest of Honor at this year’s event. There will even be a big rig with airbrushed mural of the movie on hand for you to look at.

So come out of hibernation and come on down. It is Jumpin in Jefferson

Cheers to a New Year!

December 14th, 2009 by Skyla Grimes

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We only have a few more days left to 2009. It is hard to believe that the year is almost gone. Is it just me or does tt seem that the year has just flown by. Have you started to make your New Year’s Resolutions, yet? One of mine is to do a better job of keeping up with this blog. Oh and to lose all of the weight that I put on by eating christmas cookies : (

It is that time of year where we all begin to make our New Year’s Eve plans. Of course, it will be jumping in Jefferson on New Years Eve.

The New Years Train will be rolling on December 31st. The Historic Jefferson Railway will be providing noisemakers and beverages for all of the New Years party goers. There will be fireworks off of the top of the train and just like in Times Square, they will be dropping the ball. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.railoflights.com/. The Christmas train tickets went fast and I am sure that the New Year’s train tickets will as well.

Have you ever thought of ringing in the New Year on a steamboat on Caddo Lake? The Graceful Ghost will be THE place for the swamp party on New Years Eve! The steaboat will depart at 5pm, 8pm and 11pm and will be serving heavy Hors d’œuvres and drink set ups. I am taking the 5pm tour so that I can watch the Uncertain firework display. Space is very limited for these boat rides so please call 1-877-89-Ghost (1-877-894-4678)to reserve your spot.

If you just want a place to hang out and party, then Auntie Skinners is the place for you. Auntie Skinners will be celebrating New Years Eve in a typical Auntie Skinners style. The band Ambush will be rocking all night and everyone will be able to enjoy a Champagne Toast at midnight. Cover charge is $15 and will include party favors and a champagne toast.

So if you are looking for something unique and fun for New Year’s Eve. Consider staying a couple of nights at your favorite bed and breakfast and party like it’s 2010 in Jefferson.

So get a witch’s shawl on. A broomstick you can crawl on.

It is creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky.

Jefferson is the most haunted small town in Texas. In fact, the place is just full of ghosts and spirits. Don’t believe me…watch this video. All of the ghosts and ghouls that reside here in Jefferson make it the perfect place to spend the scariest time of year.

The Historic Jefferson Railway will once again this year be spooktacularly creepy. The 8th annual Terror on the Bayou will run every weekend until Halloween. Not only will the haunted Runaway Fright Train make you scream in terror but the Creepy Screamin’ Corn Maze will take you through a haunted cemetary and end in the Tunnel of Doom. This is the stuff of nightmares!

If that doesn’t make your blood run cold, then maybe a ghost hunt will scare you to madness. By the glow of a lantern light, you can be guided through the most haunted sites in Jefferson. Tours are every Friday and Saturday night with three tour times Halloween night (8pm, 10pm, 12pm). If you are unfortunate enough, maybe you will even see one of the ghosts.

Of course, no Halloween would be complete without a costume party and contest. So come in your scariest, creepiest costume and party at Auntie Skinners Halloween night. Prizes will be awarded to the most original or scariest costumes. A terrifying time will be had by all!

Didn’t get enough bloodcurdling fun Halloween night? On November 7th, Jefferson will host the History Haunts and Legends convention. This annual all day paranormal convention will be held at the Transportation and Visitors Center and will have speakers on topics such as Bigfoot, clairvoyants, and of course ghosts. Spooky!

So if you are looking for a frighteningly good time, make the short drive here to Jefferson. Just don’t be afraid of anything that goes bump in the night!
