April 6th, 2011 by carriagehouse

 Historic Jefferson Museum

So if the Outlaw National’s Rod Run & Antique Car Show wasn’t enough to keep you busy the weekend of April 15th, then maybe you would like to spend an afternoon at the museum.   A collection of Claude McCrocklin original paintings will be presented for display at the Historic Jefferson Museum on Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m.  The general public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Claude McCrocklin is a World War II Veteran and former Prisoner of War.  Mr McCrocklin retired in 1981 as a cattle buyer for Morrell & Company, a major meat packer, and in his retirement became a member of the Caddo Lake Historical Committee back when it was being formed and was still in its infancy.   Mr. McCrocklin is an avid avocational archaeologist and has received  recognition in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas for his archaeological work.  He helped the Caddo Lake Historical Committee increase and stabilize its membership by presenting programs on archaeology and history.  Mr McCroclin also conducted archaeological investigations at over 500 sites throughout the Ark-La-Tex, and taught archealogy seminars.   Throughout the years, he has worked with the various tribal affiliations of the archaeological sites he was investigating including the Caddo and Alabama/CoushattaTribes.   Members of both tribes consider him a valued friend and have honored him in many ways.   Mr McCrocklin is a avid painter and his art depicts Caddo Indian life ranging from the Paleo period some 10,000 to 12,000 years ago to modern Caddo in portraits and ceremonial dances.

The Historic Jefferson Museum is located at 223 Austin Street.

Spring Flower Bed Cleaning at the Carriage House Bed and Breakfast

March 28th, 2011 by carriagehouse

Spring Flowers Blooming along Fence

Uugghh!  I give up.  I just can’t keep a manicure this time of year.  Not that I am a pretty, pretty princess.  I couldn’t pull it off if I tried and no one would let me get away with it any ways.  But seriously, I have spent the last week with black dirt under my fingernails …oh and dirty knees.

I have been in the gardens cleaning out weeds, dead plants and old moldy leaves for the last week.  The weather in Jefferson has been just  fabulous and I completely ran out of excuses for not getting my gardens back in shape.  I will admit it.  They really needed the attention.  Fall kinda snuck up on me this past year and I didn’t get everything prepped like I usually do.  So the gardens were begging for some serious attention.  My goal was to have them done before the Photography Weekend but that didn’t happen.  Too bad though,  I had a house full of photographers.  I bet I could have gotten some great shots of the place.

So I went to Lowes this past week and picked up a bunch of flats of annuals and talked to all of my fellow innkeepers there.  Seriously, Pam from the Delta Street Inn and Donna from the Benefield House were doing the exact same things as I was.  So I knew I was in very good company.  I started planting those flowers over the weekend and finished them this morning (in the cold no less).

Then Tom and I made a road trip to Tyler yesterday to buy some miniature roses.  I have one garden that Dixie and The Bug use as a cut through to the yard.  My thinking is that if there were some thorny roses there they might find another path into the yard and quit using my gardens.   I will let y’all know how this works out for me.  So far, the roses have not been a deterrent.

I placed a huge order back in February for some cool plants from my two favorite nurseries, Plant Delights in North Carolina  and Lazy S’S Farms (you had me at lazy) in Virginia and everything is supposed to be here by Friday.  So I have my work cut out for me getting this place ready for all of the baby perennials coming in later this week.

So if you are going to be in Jefferson this weekend, stop by the Carriage House Bed and Breakfast.  I will be the one in the yard with dirty fingernails and muddy knees.

A Better Way to Stay for a Photography Weekend

March 22nd, 2011 by carriagehouse

The 2011 Spring Photography Weekend has come and it has gone.  It is a little bittersweet to tell the truth.  I made some new friends and enjoyed the company of some old acquaintances (thinking of you Craig).  I also had the opportunity to visit with just some of the most amazing photographers. We broke bread together, drank wine together, and plied the waters of Caddo Lake together.  Now I feel a little like Dixie and The Bug standing and whimpering at the gate.  Where have all of my friends and the weekend gone?

The air Friday afternoon was super charged with excitement while we waited for the photographers and their grips (think significant others) to arrive.  One by one, cars began to pull into our parking lot, and the weekend participants began to arrive.  The weather was perfect and no sooner then people got here and dumped their bags, then they scattered to go and explore the sights of Jefferson Texas.  I don’t blame them.  The town was blooming with brightly colored Redbuds, Dogwoods and Wisteria.  It is safe to say  that Mother Nature was showing off for our folks.

The Photography Weekend kicked off with a wine tasting sponsored by Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards at the Museum of Time and Measurement.  It feels very appropriate to have this group of intrepid explorer’s social hour in a place that is full of maps.  Gerald Jones from Los Pinos always does a nice job talking about the Texas wine industry and everyone got a giggle out of some of the names of the wine.  One of our gentleman kept confusing the name of the wine called All My Exes with All My Ex Wives.  Hmmm.  Inquiring minds want to know the story there.  Another one of the gentleman kept licking the glass.  Sam, We would have gotten you seconds.

This weekend was the Super Moon.  The moon was the closest and the biggest that it has been in 18 years.  That was the reason why we picked this weekend out of all of the weekends of March.  Tom took everyone out after the wine tasting and demonstrated a type of night photography called Painting with Light.  The photographers lit up the historic steam train and the city of Jefferson had turned the lights on the old railroad trestle for our group.  I can’t wait to see some of these pictures!

Saturday morning, we got the photographers up for a sunrise photo walk of the Historic Riverfront District.  Jefferson is so beautiful when the morning sun kisses the old historic structures.  The spring light is so soft and it falls lightly as dappled sun rays through our East Texas canopy of trees.

After breakfast, the day belongs to the photographers and their traveling companions to do as they please.  We had several people who took the old steam train, and others went shopping.  We had a couple of romantics that took the horse drawn carriage ride through the Historic Riverfront District, and of course several went out to shoot more pictures.

The climax of any trip to Jefferson is a boat ride on Caddo Lake to see all of the critters and birds.  Unfortunately, the lake (swamps) had been full of bass boats and spring breakers all weekend and they had scared many of the animals and birds back into the woods.  It is a shame!  Many of the gators, turtles and other critters are up from the winter nap and are both hungry and frisky.  In other words, they are busy and active.  I was so hopeful that we were going to get some great action shots of the lake.  A few of our folks did get some nice shots of Egrets and Herons in flight.  You can always count on those birds being out there no matter how busy the lake gets.

We closed out the weekend with another big social event.  Glory Dayz restaurant held over the play “Gangster Apparel” for one performance for us.  It was a funny, funny play.  Several of our guests the prior weekends went to see it and had given the play rave reviews.  I was very anxious to see it and was not disappointed!

As an industry, we talk a lot about the differences between hotels, motels and B&Bs.  In fact, our industry trade group has a campaign going on right now called a Better Way to Stay.  The hope is to educate the public about the differences between all these different types of lodging and accommodations.  The truth is at a Bed & Breakfast, it is about the experience.  Most innkeepers go out of their way to create amazing experiences for their guests.  Each person that walks through our door comes to us with a different need.  Maybe it is a new bride and groom celebrating their honeymoon.  We will try and make their stay as comfortable and romantic as possible.  It could be that a couple of girlfriends or sisters have come to stay with us.  We will make sure they have plenty of places to sit and visit and help them plan fun activities that they can do as a group (Paraffin Wax Foot Massage Party anyone?).  No matter why you travel, we will do what we can to make sure that you find that a Bed & Breakfast is a Better Way to Stay.

These Photography Weekends that we put on are an example of this.  Here at the Carriage House Bed and Breakfast, we try and create a perfect environment for photographers to learn, network and explore East Texas.  The Photography Weekends are all about building an amazing experience not only for our photographers but for their traveling companions.  Believe you me when I tell you that this is not something you would ever find at a hotel.  Frankly, a hotel provides you with a room.  That is it.  At a B&B, you get a room but also an incredible breakfast and an experience that you won’t forget.

As for our photographers that came to Jefferson this weekend to experience spring in East Texas. Well if you will excuse the cliche, a good time was had by all.

The Diamond Bessie Room gets a Facelift

March 9th, 2011 by carriagehouse

One of the challenges to owning an old house is that there is ALWAYS maintenance to be done…and oh by the way, the warranty was up over a century ago.  Some of the work can be challenging such as old plumbing but other work can be fun such as picking out a new paint color or new curtains for the room.

I always hated the color of the Diamond Bessie Room.  It was this yellow buttery color that never went with the theme of the room.  We didn’t paint it that color.  It was that color when we bought the place.  The room badly needed a fresh coat of paint since it probably hasn’t been updated in 10 years or better.  However, other projects always took priority to this room getting repainted.  Finally, the Diamond Bessie’s number came up this week and the room is getting a fresh and new color of  paint.  I have chosen a darker, richer color of brown for this room.  I am hoping that this new paint color really amps up the elegance of the Diamond Bessie Room.

This is one of the benefits of staying at a Bed & Breakfast versus a hotel or motel.  We are always looking for new ways to improve our guest experience.  We are always looking at our rooms, our service, our breakfasts, and our packages to determine if it is the best that we can deliver.   Tom and I are always tweaking things so that we can make a stay at the Carriage House Bed and Breakfast the most romantic, the most adventurous, or the most relaxing place it can be for our guests.  That is why we say that staying at a B&B is a Better Way To Stay!

Bring your Pampered Pooch to a Pet Friendly Bed & Breakfast

January 28th, 2011 by carriagehouse

Just a piece of advice…don’t look at those sad puppy dog eyes as you drop your baby off at the kennel.  They love you so much and, when you leave them behind, you just break their little hearts.  Trust me.  Those sad eyes will get you every time.  You know, there is a solution that will make both of you happy.  You can come to the Carriage House B&B and treat your four legged friend to a day at the spa with our Pampered Pooch package.

The Carriage House Bed & Breakfast is one of the few pet friendly lodging establishments (bed and breakfasts, hotels, motels) in Jefferson Texas.  We allow cats and dogs (some breed restrictions) to stay in any of our rooms in the cottages in the back.  The Ladybird Cottage, the Diamond Bessie room, The Allen Urquhart room, the Ruth Lester room and the Jay Gould room are all pet friendly rooms.  In fact, many of our pet families love to stay in the Jay Gould room.  It has its very own fenced yard and is our most private room.  Please call us at 903-665-9511 for more information about your pet staying with us.

Because we want your pooch to enjoy themselves just as much as you will, we created the Pampered Pooch package.  We know you want to spoil your baby.  We just love to spoil our two pups. With our Pampered Pooch package you can treat them to a day at the doggie spa for a complete beauty treatment.  The spa will give your dog a bath, blow dry, a brush out, a trim and a cut.  If that just wasn’t enough, your puppy will also be treated to a 30 minute massage for complete relaxation.  We will also have a goody bag full of treats and toys waiting for your furry friend in the room when you check in.  The prices for this doggie package are listed on our website.

So when you plan your vacation, bring the whole family.  There is something for everyone here at the Carriage House, even your pet.

Soooo…Valentines is right around the corner.  Have you started to make your plans yet?  The Carriage House Bed and Breakfast has several different romance packages put together to make your Valentines VERY special.  You pick the package and we will take care of everything else.

The Naughty and Nice package is a sexy and romantic package for a Valentine’s weekend full of adventure.  The entire weekend is built around the two of you reconnecting and getting that time together that you just cannot get at home.  When you arrive, we will have a custom made floral arrangement waiting for you in your room as well as a meat and cheese tray so that you do not need to go out that night.

The whole evening is built around the two of you playing the sexy Enchanted Evening game.  Before you start, each of you writes down a wish on a piece of paper.   Then the game starts and the two of you move your game pieces around the board, drawing the appropriate cards.  The game cards will direct your actions. Some cards ask for verbal responses, which are positive and supportive. Other cards suggest gentle touching, some playful, others subtle and ambiguous.  Whoever wins the game gets their wish granted. It will definitely be a night that you will not forget!
