 MONDAY, DECEMBER 5, 6:00 P.M.

Jefferson’s Annual Christmas Parade will take one back to a simpler and more idyllic time Monday, December 5 at 6:00 p.m.

Lighted floats depicting nativity scenes, carolers, and bands are but a sample of the things to see. The evening’s special guest, Santa Claus, atop a fire truck will be making a list and checking it twice.

“Some of our guests said this was very touching as it evoked childhood memories of long ago”, Juanita Wakefield Chitwood, Executive Director, Marion County Chamber of Commerce.

Originating at Lion’s Park, the parades will weave its way along Henderson, Market, Austin, Polk and finish at Brookshire’s along Broadway.

Join in on the fun as we celebrate Christmas as it was many years ago.

The House of the Seasons is pleased to announce the publication of its first historical photographic illustrated novel, The House of the Seasons. The novel was co-authored by Richard Collins, Dan Kuenster, and T.J. Kuenster.

Richard Collins, a Texas entrepreneur, is president of the House of the Seasons and CEO of istation, an interactive education company in Dallas. Dan Kuenster is an Emmy-award winning animator and the Executive Vice President of Art and Animation at istation. T. J. Kuenster is the Musical Director of the Glen Campbell Band and is a well-known songwriter. His credits include original songs on the soundtracks for the Don Bluth animated films All Dogs Go to Heaven and Rockadoodle.

The House of the Seasons centers around Jeannie Epperson, the daughter of the home’s builder, Benjamin Epperson, a prominent lawyer, entrepreneur, railroad man, and political leader.

The novel tells the haunting story of Jeannie’s childhood and her friendship with a ghost during the time of the Civil War. Soon after Jeannie’s birth, her mother dies. Jeannie’s Aunt Agatha, an old maid of twenty-four, comes to take care of the child. An old friend, Texas Ranger Edward Hamilton, leaves the Rangers to work for Mr. Epperson and falls in love with Agatha. The Civil War brings tragedy to the family, and it changes their lives.

The story is based on historical facts and characters. It weaves together several true events from the history of the home. One of the important characters in the book is Sadie, Jeannie’s cat, her loyal friend and companion. Sadie lives at the House of the Seasons today and is beloved by all the guests who visit the home.

The House of the Seasons is a wonderful story for children of all ages from 6 to 86. The authors will be in Jefferson the last two weekends in October to sign first editions of the novel. The book is on sale at Beauty and the Book, the House of the Seasons, and several locations around Jefferson, for $10.95.

Trammel’s Trace Rendezvous Brings History to Life

Are you a pre-1840’s re-enactor, period crafter or entertainer? Or a spectator or school group that wants to have some fun? Then come to the 4thAnnual Trammel’s Trace Rendezvous and American Indian Heritage Celebration at the Cypress Bayou RV Park, 1602 Highway 49 East, Jefferson, Texas. The event will take place November 11 and 12, 2011, with set-up beginning on November 8. Admission is $5 per person, per day and includes primitive camping.  Children 5 and under are free. Living History Participants and Period Crafters will receive free entry for the weekend.  Special pricing will be offered to school groups.

Mountain Men, Trappers and Indians get together on the bank of the Big Cypress Bayou to swap goods, tell stories and celebrate survival of another season.  There will be a drawing on Friday morning for a bow or black power deer hunt on the property as well as a drawing for an opportunity to trap a beaver in the beaver pond.  Hunters must have a valid hunting license.  The drawings will be limited to participating living history re-enactors or period crafters.

The Rendezvous is a learning and teaching experience and is open to the public. It is an authentic pre-1840’s living history camp with demonstrations, competitions, children’s games, primitive black powder shooting matches, and tomahawk & knife throwing.  Period crafters & artisans, buckskinners, Indians and Texas History Re-enactors and spectators – all are welcome.

The Rendezvous will feature a Day of Learning on Friday for school, church and youth groups, which will include a structured tour of Living History Demonstrations. For group pricing, visit www.TrammelsTrace.com.

Be sure to board the Historic Jefferson Railway’s narrated steam train to hear the history of Jefferson, Trammel’s Trace and the Caddo Indians as their tale unfolds along the Big Cypress Bayou for a five-mile, 35-minute round trip that will depart from the RV Park.  Along the way, passengers view one of the few remaining Confederate powder magazines from the civil war era, the first artificial gas plant site in the state, as well as other historic sites.

The Jefferson Historical Society & Museum will be participating in Friday’s Day of Learning with school group pricing.  Inside you can find examples of porcelains, potteries, paintings, early Jefferson home furnishings, and other collectibles.  Be sure to visit their Caddo Room where you will learn about the people that inhabited this land before the Europeans arrived. In fact, nearby Caddo Lake is named after these peaceful tribes, who actually tie their own history back to that of the lakes.

Bigfoot (also known in these parts as the Boggy Creek monster) has been sighted running along the railroad tracks as the sun begins to set.  Is the tale of the Bigfoot sightings fact or fiction?

The Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy website says  “Jerry Hestand, Mark Porter and Charles DeVore investigated a number of cases in Marion County from reliable trustworthy people in or near these remote bottomlands.  It is their assessment that it seems highly likely that events have been reported accurately”.

The train rolls right by the home of the Boggy Creek monster as depicted in the upcoming horror movie, “Boggy Creek”, filmed in Jefferson and Uncertain.  The movie is loosely based on the old Big Foot or Sasquatch legends, says Brian T. Jaynes, director and producer.

So, are the sightings real or a spoof to enhance your rider experience?  You’ll have to ride the train to find out!

The Historic Jefferson Railway recreates the Golden Era of Steam railroading with narrated day trains on Saturday at 2:30 and 4:30.  Steam hissing, whistle blowing and pistons chuggin, Old Engine #7 will take you on a scenic trip along the Big Cypress Bayou.  As you roll through the history laden Piney Woods, you’ll view a Confederate Powder Magazine and traverse the site of one of the oldest, historical towns in Texas.

Start Saturday evening at 8:00 with free Ghost Stories at the historic “haunted” train depot.  The story-teller will keep you at the edge of your seat as you hear stories about famous and not-so-famous Ghosts of Jefferson and Northeast Texas.

Then climb aboard the legendary Ghost Train at 9:00.  The Ghost Train carries you deep into the dark woods along the Bayou.  The narrator shares legends of Jefferson and East Texas ghosts and a story or two that will make you reach for your loved ones! Historic Jefferson Railway was nominated as one of the Best Excursion Railroad Theme Trains for its Ghost Train by the readers of Cowcatcher magazine for the First Annual 2009 Gold Rail Awards.

The Railway is a part of the thriving community of Jefferson sponsoring major events throughout the year that bring over 20,000 visitors to Jefferson.  Riders look forward all year to Terror on the Bayou Fright Train, Rail of Lights Christmas & New Year’s Train as well as Diamond Don’s Riverport National Vintage Motocross and Trammel’s Trace Rendezvous.

The train was built in 1964 for Six Guns Territory in Florida and moved to Jefferson in 1986. It is a Crown Metals reproduction of the 1870’s American class  4-4-0 steam locomotive christened the Robert E. Lee.  The open car coach seats still carry the custom medallions cast into them designed especially for the Six Guns amusement park.

New Kitchen Cabinets are Being Installed at the Carriage House B & B

We hit another big milestone this week.  The new kitchen cabinets are being installed.  Finally this is beginning to look like a real kitchen and not just a big empty room.

We decided to go with a light maple color since the old cabinets were very dark.  The old kitchen had a feeling of being in a cave and I was constantly complaining about having to cook int he dark.  Our plan is to make the new kitchen very light and bright.  We want to it be a cheerful and pleasant place to work.
