The Accidentally on Purpose Garden Bench

April 21st, 2011 by carriagehouse

garden bench

“But it was for a good cause!”

I had mentioned a few times to Tom while at Lowes and Home Depot that I wanted a garden bench.  I even pointed to a few that tickled my fancy.  They were usually wooden with grape leaves or a Texas star design in the back of them.  In the grand garden plan in my head, I even had a place for it.   Tucked back behind the hydrangeas and the azaleas.  It would be a place of quiet and a place of privacy.

After I got the bench, I immediately thought that a patio cover or pergola from Aluminum patio covers Phoenix AZ will be great because the sun will not hit directly when we sit in there.

I imagined young couples in love sitting in my gardens.  Holding hands and quietly whispering sweet nothings to each other.  All while my coneflowers and daisies gently swayed in the breeze in the background, providing the backdrop to the young lover’s blooming romance.

Usually Tom would look at the price tag, grunt and we would move on to the tasks that we came for…a drill bit, light bulbs, emergency plumber repairs, whatever this old house needed that particular day.  The garden bench would be left behind to wait for us to come and get another day.  My young lovers would need to find somewhere else to sit and gaze into each other’s eyes.

If you are a regular follower of this blog, then you know that last weekend was the Outlaw Nationals Rod Run & Antique Car Show.  Jefferson was filled with beautiful vintage cars!  Imagine 300 antique cars parked on brick streets in front of beautifully restored historic buildings.  This is one of my favorite weekends of the year!

Saturday night, the organizers held an auction down at Auntie Skinners to benefit the Percy Johnson Burn Foundation, the Boys Club, the Marion County Humane Society and the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Dept.  Tom and I met up with a couple of friends who had donated some of their fabulous retro lawn chairs and a retro picnic cooler to watch the auction.

Tom was doing his usual spinning around and shooting pictures of all of the fun at the auction.  He and his camera were pretty happy and content and, I felt pretty safe that he was too busy to bid on anything.  Then suddenly, something caught his eye and he started a bidding war…against one of our regular guests.  Bad move.

Next up was a bench.  Tom looked at me and pointed to the bench.  I shook my head no.  Apparently it was dark in there because he started to bid on it.  I tried to get  his attention to get him to stop but he just kept on.  Sold…to the guy with the camera.  Great…just great!  At least the money went to a good cause and I got a tax deductible receipt.

So now I am the proud owner of a garden bench.  It doesn’t exactly look like how I imagined it would.  It is a little plainer and needs painted, but it is mine.  I have it in the garden tucked back behind the hydrangeas and the azaleas.  Now, all I need are my sweet young lovers.

They are Big! They are Beautiful! And They are Here This Weekend!

Antique cars sitting in front of the Historic Jefferson Hotel

Off in the distance you could hear the rumble and the roar. On trailers and in toy boxes, they arrived.  Polished and shined, they sparkled in the moonlight and glistened in the sunlight. You couldn’t help but stop and stare at the beauty on the street.

If the antique cars are here, then it must be the Outlaw National’s Rod Run & Antique Car Show.   Each April, Jefferson is overtaken by some of the most beautifully restored antique cars you have ever seen.  All of the cars in this year’s car show are ’72s and older.  These cars are vintage and they are amazing.

The Carriage House Bed & Breakfast parking lot has been taken over by these trailers and toy boxes.  As I write this, the proud owners are all out there polishing the chrome and buffing to a gleam.  It is hard for me to believe that these cars could shine more then they already do.  Soon, they will take these babies down to the car show and park them for the world to ooh and ahh over.

If you are in the area this weekend, you have to stop and see these beauties and talk to their proud owners.  I promise you.  They would love to tell you all about them.

Later this weekend (or Monday), I will post some of the pictures from this weekend to the Carriage House B&B’s Facebook page.  Stop by and take a look.

People Judge You by the Hostas You Keep

April 14th, 2011 by carriagehouse

I feel gritty and dirty and sweaty.  I also have a Bug on me.  Not the type that you will see here and call your pest control guy over. Read these ant tips from Pelican Pest Control that are very effective for any kind of pests. This one has a cold wet nose and a wagging tail.  I promised myself that I would get this blog out tonight before I jumped in the shower and called it a day.  Once again, I have spent the entire day working out in my gardens…mulching.

A friend of mine calls his gardens, the Gardens of Weedin’, and I think I need to come up with something equally as clever.  Joe, like almost everyone else in Jefferson’s Historic District, takes incredible pride in his gardens. Living in Jefferson is a little bit like living in a botanical garden.  Every garden here is amazing!

When we lived in McKinney, I had the nicest gardens in our subdivision.  People would drive by and slow down just to study my front yard.  Our HOA stopped giving me the Yard of the Month because it wasn’t fair to everyone else. People would stop me while I was out walking the dogs and ask me plant questions.  I had the yard that all others were compared by.

Until we moved to Jefferson.  Now I have met my match.

Of course, I did start out with a few disadvantages.  The first was my yard.  You could not stand in the courtyard and see the street because it was so badly overgrown with weeds and those stinky, smelly palms.  We had an overgrown Wisteria bush that was choking one of our Elm trees.  In case you don’t know, Wisteria is a horribly invasive weed here in the South.  As pretty as it is when it blooms, I hate the stuff.  We had Wisteria growing into our attic, into our neighbors attic, into his neighbors attic.  You get the picture.

The other disadvantage was that I did not understand what grew here in this climate.  In the Dallas area, you plant anything that likes the heat and never wants to be watered.  Although, we are currently in a severe drought, I have to keep in mind that I now live in a wetland and plant accordingly.  In fact, moving to Jefferson, I changed an entire growing zone.  I went from 7b to 8a.  I recently had to explain to a nursery up north, where I had ordered some plants, that when the gators wake up, we stop worrying about a freeze.

I have had a lot of fun picking out plants. Gardening purists would tell me that I need to have a plan.  That I should have a blueprint of what my gardens will look like.  I should have a chart of what plants I will plant where. I should know my theme and stick to it.  That has never been my gardening style.

I have planted several Azaleas, Gardenias, and Camellias because I believe that every Southern garden should have these.

I have enjoyed looking through catalogs and picking out unique plants.  That is how the Pitcher Plants ended up by the AC condensation hose.  These strange plants love to eat mosquitoes and that area is real boggy.  I was so excited to put something there that would take care of my real pest problem. Pest problems can get gotten rid of with the help of pest control ft wayne. You need to take the help of a pest control service that offers healthy, comfortable, and clean environment solutions like pest control puyallup, which will provide the best solution to your problem and provide excellent customer service.

I have also enjoyed listening to my guest’s thoughts and ideas.

Last year, I had a lady come to me and remark that my gardens were lovely but were missing some Hostas.  She was very much bothered by this fact and brought it up several times during her visit.  So this year, I planted three  to honor her.  Of course, I did not buy any ordinary Hostas.  I special ordered a variety called Stained Glass Window.  They are right there…in the shade and under the Elm tree.  When she comes back to see me again, she can sit in the Garden Courtyard and drink her morning coffee and enjoy her Hostas.

National Innkeepers Day – Have you Hugged Your Innkeeper Today?

March 25th, 2011 by carriagehouse

Dress Shirt

Did you know that yesterday was National Innkeepers Day?  Me either.

Tom was in Dallas yesterday and heard on the news radio that yesterday, March 24th, was National Innkeeper Day.  So my sweetie went out and bought me a National Innkeeper Day present and took me to the 5 D Cattle Company Steakhouse for a steak dinner.  We have been super busy this month and Tom said that he realized that I had been working really hard.  He just wanted to recognize me for all of my efforts.  What a great guy!!  I think I just may keep him.

It is finally Valentine’s Day Weekend at the Carriage House Bed and Breakfast

February 12th, 2011 by carriagehouse

Valentines Day is super important here in B&B land.  I know a lot of people say that it is a contrived holiday made up to support the greeting card companies.  Maybe.  Frankly, we don’t worry too much about it here.  We have a house full of people who are in love and ready to celebrate each other this weekend.  That is what is what we care about!

This weekend we have all types of couples staying here from a young couple who are getting married this weekend to couples celebrating their wedding anniversaries.  Of course, we also have couples that are just looking to escape the ice and snow and enjoy a weekend away from the kids. If you’re looking to spice things up in the bedroom and want that added thrill of secret stimulation, check out this high-rated remote vibrator.

One of our Valentine’s couple took us up on the Naughty and Nice Package.  Our wonderful photographer, Tom got some great shots of all of the amazing stuff that comes in this sexy and romantic package.  Trust me, next time you are needing a couple of days away with your sweetie, you will definitely want to get this package.  It is just amazing and will be a vacation that you won’t forget.

So to all of the romantic hearts out there, Happy Valentines Day!!

It’s a Dog’s Life at the Carriage House B&B

February 2nd, 2011 by carriagehouse

Well the Snowcation is over and it was back to work this morning.  Dixie roused me from bed at her usual time of 6.30am.  I don’t know how she learned to read a clock but I wish she would just decide to sleep in one day.  Or at least not be so demanding about me getting up with her.  And of course as soon as I let The Bug out of her crate, we are off to the races.  Coffee, breakfast, shower and then I plop in front of my computer to see what has come in over night.

The nasty cold weather has been keeping people from traveling all week and we have had no guests here at the Carriage House since Sunday night.  Tom bravely turtled his way back on the ice from Dallas this morning.  The normal 2.5 – 3 hour drive from Allen took him 5 hours but I am so thankful that he is home.

Dixie and her trusty sidekick, The Bug, come in mid-morning from a hearty wrestling match in the yard and Dixie goes running straight to her water bowl for a large drink of water.  I noticed several weeks ago that she was drinking more water then usual.  In fact, Ms. Beverly, our housekeeper has noticed it.  Dixie’s groomer, Ms. Tracey, has noticed it.  Everyone has noticed and commented on it.  At that moment, Dixie is lapping up water like it is 110 degrees outside which it clearly is not.  So I call the vet to make an appt and he tells us to come right in.  He too is not busy.

Now a quick trip to the vets office should be no big deal…right.  I just put Dixie on her leash and I throw her into the back of my SUV.  Simple!  Some how The Bug gets out the gate at the same time and self loads into the back of the truck as well.  “Fine”, I say “but you are going to have to stay in the car” and I spend the whole 2 minute drive trying to figure out how that is going to happen.  I decide the best way to approach this is to block the car door with my body there by controlling the access.  I open the door and throw my body in front of it.  The Bug goes flying over my head and straight to the door of the office.  The vet tech thinking she was being helpful opens the door and what ensues is a scene out of one of those British comedies.  Everyone is chasing The Bug through the office.  The Bug is in front followed by Vet Tech 1, the Vet, me, and then Vet Tech 2.  She runs from room to room dodging us under furniture and slipping between us as we all grab at her sprinting little body.  We finally trap her in the surgery room (the last place I would want to be trapped).  I catch her up and carry her out to the car where she spends the rest of the visit.  Poor ol’ Dixie has to get some blood work done.

Dixie as it turns out is fine.  No Diabetes and her kidneys are fine.  The doc says that she may just be thirsty.  However, The Bug has been diagnosed as being ADHD.  Quote…”you have to get up real early in the morning to catch up with her”.  Deep Sigh.

Feeling that the days adventures are over, I sit down at my desk and start pounding out some work.  I glance out my window only to see The Bug dragging something the size of herself around the yard and into the breezeway.  Curious, I get up and go out to the breezeway where she proudly drops a dead and yet still bleeding squirrel at my feet.  Blech!  Yuck!  Aaargh!

You see, The Bug is a Feist Terrier.  If you are unfamiliar with that breed don’t feel bad.  They are a non-AKC approved breed and are only found in the rural South.  They are bred for the curious sport of squirrel hunting.  So I guess she was taping into her genetics and decided that now was as good of a time as any to go hunt a squirrel.  I double gloved before I picked up the nasty, oozing thing.

Ah well, under the instructions from Champion Rottweilers dog breeder, the morning’s escapades wore out the puppy and Dixie and they both found there way back to their respective beds.  I finally have some peace and can get some work done.  My only fear is that the day is still young and there are plenty more misadventures to be had.  Just a quick nap and then back to business of being them.

It is a dog’s life.
