21st Annual Taste of Jefferson

October 4th, 2011 by carriagehouse

Taste of Jefferson

“21st ANNUAL TASTE OF JEFFERSON”

Dine as never before on Sunday, October 16, 2011 on Austin Street in historic Jefferson, Texas as the street becomes East Texas’ largest restaurant during the “21st Annual Taste of Jefferson”.

Local restaurateurs, café owners and non-profit organizations turn out samples of their finest foods for this mouthwatering event.

“Last year we served food to more than 800 visitors”, said Charles Chitwood, President of the Marion County Chamber of Commerce. “Once they bought their tickets, they could wander up and down the street, choose their favorite dishes, then head back for more – if they had any room left.”

The street-long feast serves up every imaginable sample from soup to a full meal. Visitors can start with a soup or salad (or both), pick innumerable entrée samples, and then top it off from a dizzying assortment of desserts.

Austin Street will be closed to through traffic so bring comfortable shoes for the three-block buffet.

Tickets are: Adults, $5 for children ages 5-11.

The Taste of Jefferson is sponsored by the Marion County Chamber of Commerce .

Lunch will be served Sunday, October 16 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 pm.

Parade of Umbrellas this Saturday in Jefferson, Texas

September 26th, 2011 by carriagehouse

Umbrella Parade

As you may be aware, Marion County has been devastated recently by wildfires.  In fact, the largest wildfire in the state of Texas was here in the Marion/ Cass county area.  We didn’t get the press that the Bastrop fire got.  I guess it is not as sexy to report in front of a $30,000 home in a rural county when you can stand in front of million dollar McMansion out side of Austin.

Firefighters came as far away as California to help us put out these horrific fires.  The Red Cross mobilized teams from all over the United States to provide relief and assistance to the victims and the firefighters.  Many people did a lot and all did some.

These small volunteer fire departments struggle to fund fires of these magnitudes. Money, like the one that can be acquired on 카지노 검증, is always tight and this recession has hit rural American harder then it has the big cities.  Cities have struggled to fund their services and Jefferson is no different.  As an example,  our brush truck is over 35 years old.  The firefighters that fought these fires gave up days from work and money that their families could have used to pay bills.   It is tough for these volunteer fire departments and we all need to pull together to help these heroes out.

Here in one of the many ways that we can all pull together and have fun at the same time.  Please help our Firefighters!!

Parade of Umbrellas

SATURDAY ~ OCT. 1 @ 5 PM

CITY HALL, CORNER OF POLK & AUSTIN

DOWNTOWN JEFFERSON

Bring your Umbrellas, decorated or not,
(rainboots and slickers too!) and participate
in this benefit for our LOCAL and AREA FIREFIGHTERS!

We’ll parade to the Visitor-Transportation Buildlng and
enjoy a meal, entertainment and silent auction at a
suggested donation of $20 per person!

LET’S PROMOTE MORE RAIN AND THANK OUR FIREFIGHTERS!

New Kitchen Almost Ready for Prime Time

September 25th, 2011 by carriagehouse

Tom in New Kitchen

It is good to be back!!

After spending the last 8 weeks doing some major restoration work on the Carriage House B&B, we are almost ready to begin serving breakfast to our guests again.  We had to shut down the kitchen (and the main house) to do our final push in remodeling and the restoration of this 130 year old house.  We have been restoring this old house for almost two years now and this is the big (hopefully) final push.

The kitchen was ancient and not in a cool antique way but in an out of date wiring so we need to consider looking for experts like the ones on https://callbigfamily.com/residential-electrical/ to work on this. For the leaky plumbing, it needed a plumbing repair. We had to contact nearby professionals like these technicians in Arlington. You may also look up plumbing repair in Seattle if you’re near the area. You may also need the services of companies like Moffett Plumbing & Air if your drains have constantly been clogging.

The appliances were beyond awful.  They were unlevel and cooked inconsistently.  The counter tops were cracked and the cabinets had holes in them.  It was a hobby of Tom’s and mine to complain about the kitchen. For plumbing concerns, visit sites like https://www.homechoiceplumbing.com/plumbing/installation-replacements/ for professional help.

So we spent a couple of years planning our new kitchen and decided that the best time to do the work was in the slow season which is the heat of the summer for us.  We had to view the website of some cabinet makers too, to get some decent cabinets installed in our kitchen. It has been a grueling process that tested both our patience and our good natures at times but we are almost done.  All that is left is to paint and do the nit-picky stuff.

If you are planning to build a rustic country kitchen or a modern kitchen with this beautiful selection of wall and floor tilers you can make a great project.

Friday night we cooked our first meal in the kitchen.  We made up a batch of Mama Ronchi’s Marinara sauce.  It is Sunday morning and we are making a mess and fixing breakfast (only for ourselves).

It feels good to be back!  Life is starting to get back to normal.

Next week, we officially reopen the kitchen and the main house for guests.  Come on by sometime and we will show you all of the awesome changes that we made.

The Red Door at the Carriage House B&B

August 31st, 2011 by carriagehouse

Red Door

When Tom and I were in Natchez Mississippi earlier this summer, we learned the legend around the red front door. You can also get incredible doors and repair services from https://www.chicagogaragedoor.com/ .  Many fine southern homes have them and I always loved them as a statement.  In fact, I always secretly wanted one.

On a tour of one of Natchez’s grand antebellum homes, we learned that back when these historic homes were built, the red door signified that a major milestone had been hit.  The homeowners would paint their front doors red when they paid off their mortgages.  I guess it was a way to show off to everyone in the neighborhood.

So when we decided to repaint this old house, I absolutely had to have a red door.  Certainly we have not paid off our mortgage but, I love the history behind the red door.  I think it adds a little flair to the house that it did not have before.

Labor Day Steam Train

August 29th, 2011 by carriagehouse

Labor Day Celebration at Historic Jefferson Railway

September 3, 2011

Come out for a Labor Day Celebration at the Historic Jefferson Railway on September 3, 2011, and ride on an authentic Steam Train along the Cypress Bayou River in Jefferson, Texas. Celebrate Labor Day with a picnic of hot dogs and chips and a free prize from the Treasure Chest.  Come see the Support Our Troops display that honors the United States Military. Active Military personnel ride free.

Bigfoot (also known in these parts as the Boggy Creek monster) has been sighted running along the railroad tracks as the sun begins to set.  Is the tale of the Bigfoot sightings fact or fiction?

The Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy website says  “Jerry Hestand, Mark Porter and Charles DeVore investigated a number of cases in Marion County from reliable trustworthy people in or near these remote bottomlands.  It is their assessment that it seems highly likely that events have been reported accurately”.

The train rolls right by the home of the Boggy Creek monster as depicted in the upcoming horror movie, “Boggy Creek”, filmed in Jefferson and Uncertain.  The movie is loosely based on the old Big Foot or Sasquatch legends, says Brian T. Jaynes, director and producer.

So, are the sightings real or a spoof to enhance your rider experience?  You’ll have to ride the train to find out!

The Historic Jefferson Railway recreates the Golden Era of Steam railroading with narrated day trains on Saturday at 2:30 and 4:30.  Steam hissing, whistle blowing and pistons chuggin, Old Engine #7 will take you on a scenic trip along the Big Cypress Bayou.  As you roll through the history laden Piney Woods, you’ll view a Confederate Powder Magazine and traverse the site of one of the oldest, historical towns in Texas.

Start Saturday evening at 8:00 with free Ghost Stories at the historic “haunted” train depot.  The story-teller will keep you at the edge of your seat as you hear stories about famous and not-so-famous Ghosts of Jefferson and Northeast Texas.

Then climb aboard the legendary Ghost Train at 9:00.  The Ghost Train carries you deep into the dark woods along the Bayou.  The narrator shares legends of Jefferson and East Texas ghosts and a story or two that will make you reach for your loved ones! Historic Jefferson Railway was nominated as one of the Best Excursion Railroad Theme Trains for its Ghost Train by the readers of Cowcatcher magazine for the First Annual 2009 Gold Rail Awards.

The Railway is a part of the thriving community of Jefferson sponsoring major events throughout the year that bring over 20,000 visitors to Jefferson.  Riders look forward all year to Terror on the Bayou Fright Train, Rail of Lights Christmas & New Year’s Train as well as Diamond Don’s Riverport National Vintage Motocross and Trammel’s Trace Rendezvous.

The train was built in 1964 for Six Guns Territory in Florida and moved to Jefferson in 1986. It is a Crown Metals reproduction of the 1870’s American class  4-4-0 steam locomotive christened the Robert E. Lee.  The open car coach seats still carry the custom medallions cast into them designed especially for the Six Guns amusement park.

Historic Jefferson Railway is located at 400 E. Austin in Downtown Jefferson, Texas.  For information on pricing, schedule and events, please visit www.JeffersonRailway.com or call 866-398-2038.
