Have you ever wanted to hear Diamond Bessie tell her own version of what happened to her when she was murdered? Ever been curious as to what those last few minutes were like on the Mittie Stephens as it caught fire and sank in Caddo Lake. This Saturday, April 20 from 5pm to 7pm, come on down to Oakwood Cemetery and watch four vignettes from some of this historic graveyard’s most famous residents. A donation of $10 per person is being requested and the tour should take an hour.

Meet Peg, The Wonder Dog!!

I would like to introduce you to the newest Carriage House Bed and Breakfast team member, Peg. Peg is a 1.5 year old Lab/ Pointer mix and she is all puppy. This sweet girl was adopted in February from FurrEver Pets and has been working hard for the last six week on socialization and getting used to life at a B&B.
If you look closely, you will realize that Peg is a Tripawd. The first part of her life was awful and she has been abused horribly bad. She was eventually thrown out along side of the road and shot. They missed…Thank you Lord. She was picked up and taken to a vet in Gilmer where her left front leg was amputated.
She still gets a little nervous around men. So if she doesn’t come running up to greet you, give her some time. She has come a long way in 6 weeks and will be your best friend before you leave. She LOVES belly rubs so that is an awesome way to say Hi to her.
Perfect Time of Year to See the Critters

One of the questions we often get is “When is the best time of year to see the wildlife on Caddo Lake?” The answer is right now. In fact both Spring and Fall are the best times of year to see the wildlife on Caddo Lake.
When the nights are cool and the days are warm, the gators, turtles and other critters are pulling themselves out of the water to warm themselves. You can often see them laying on the beaches and felled trees sunning themselves. The handsome gentleman in the picture is a well known local named “Fraidy Cat”.
The birds are changing out season right now as well. The Winter birds are flying north again and the Summer birds are just arriving. In early spring, many of the animals are waking up from their long winter naps and are hungry and frisky. It is a busy active time in the swamps of Caddo Lake!!

Spring Break Bookings Going Fast

If you have not done so yet, you need to book your room for Spring Break soon. Our rooms are going fast and you do not want to miss out on all of the fun things going on in Jefferson and Caddo Lake this Spring.
All of the boat tours and train rides will be ramping back up the first weekend of Spring Break after being closed for inspections and repairs during the Winter season. Ten new paddling trails were recently opened by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on both Caddo Lake and the Big Cypress Bayou. If you are looking for something more low-key, then visit one of our local wineries and sit back and enjoy some East Texas sweet wine and dine at some of the best restaurants that East Texas has to offer.
The Carriage House is located in downtown Jefferson, Texas and is walking distance from all of the shops, tours and restaurants. In fact we are so close to all of the shopping, that we are between two antique stores! We are also the only pet-friendly bed and breakfast in Jefferson. So bring your best buddy for a $50 non-refundable pet fee and feel completely at home.

The 2013 Winter Coffee Mugs are here and are available while supplies last. The 2013 Winter colors are Light Teal with a Cinnamon/ White Glaze and Black with a Sand White Glaze. Both of these mugs are available only in the Barrel shape.
All of our mugs are hand thrown by a potter from Deneen Pottery in Minnesota In this day of Chinese assembly line products, our mugs are American craftsmanship at it’s best.

Spring is on its way!

Although it is only the first week of February, it is obvious that spring is on its way!! The Tulip Trees are all blooming. The Azaleas are setting their buds and there is new growth on all of the rose bushes.
I have already started to work on cleaning out the gardens to get them back in shape for you to enjoy. As a preview of what is to come, please enjoy this video taken from last year’s blooms.
New Kayak and Canoe Paddling Trails

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has opened ten new kayak and canoe paddling trails on the Big Cypress Bayou and Caddo Lake. Trail markers have been placed along all of these trails to help you navigate these mystical and ethereal waterways.
Five of the new trails follow the Big Cypress Bayou with the put ins and take outs located at Backwater Jack’s RV park. The other five paddling trails are on Caddo Lake with the put ins and take outs located at various locations on the lake

Finally the new Christmas Mugs are here!!!
Although they are a month late, 2 of our 4 Christmas colors are here just in time to make Christmas presents. I have a beautiful Plum with a Lilac top and a Forest Green with a Dijon top in a tankard style mug available and ready to ship.
All of these mugs are hand thrown by a potter at Deneen Pottery in Minnesota. In a world where all of our manufacturing is outsourced to China, this is a American craftsmanship at it’s absolute finest. These even feel better in your hand then a cheap Chinese mass produced coffee mug.
