The Red Door at the Carriage House B&B

August 31st, 2011 by carriagehouse

Red Door

When Tom and I were in Natchez Mississippi earlier this summer, we learned the legend around the red front door.  Many fine southern homes have them and I always loved them as a statement.  In fact, I always secretly wanted one.

On a tour of one of Natchez’s grand antebellum homes, we learned that back when these historic homes were built, the red door signified that a major milestone had been hit.  The homeowners would paint their front doors red when they paid off their mortgages.  I guess it was a way to show off to everyone in the neighborhood.

So when we decided to repaint this old house, I absolutely had to have a red door.  Certainly we have not paid off our mortgage but, I love the history behind the red door.  I think it adds a little flair to the house that it did not have before.

New Kitchen Cabinets are Being Installed at the Carriage House B & B

We hit another big milestone this week.  The new kitchen cabinets are being installed.  Finally this is beginning to look like a real kitchen and not just a big empty room.

We decided to go with a light maple color since the old cabinets were very dark.  The old kitchen had a feeling of being in a cave and I was constantly complaining about having to cook int he dark.  Our plan is to make the new kitchen very light and bright.  We want to it be a cheerful and pleasant place to work.

New Porch at the Carriage House Bed & Breakfast

August 25th, 2011 by carriagehouse

New Porch

It has been  a little while since I have posted pics of the renovation.  The new porch is nearly complete and will be so awesome to sit on when we finally get some cooler weather.  When things get really crazy and stressful with the contractors, I sit back, close my eyes and imagine sitting in a rocking chair on the new porch with a cool breeze  gently fluttering the air.  Oh wait, I just went to my happy place.

One of the things I am most excited about is the new french doors leading in to the dining room.  These doors are really special.  They came out of a turn of the century house in Marshall that is being renovated.  They are beautiful beveled glass.  I think they will become a signature of the Carriage House B&B once they are in installed.  A company up in Texarkana picked them up earlier this week to build casements around them.  When they come back, I will post some before and after pics of them including a picture of the storage shed where they have been for no telling how many decades.

The kitchen cabinets are being installed this week.  I will try and get some pictures and post them tomorrow.

A Sweet Surprising Generous Gift

August 24th, 2011 by carriagehouse

Book

Feed My Lambs, Feed My Sheep. The Meals and Memories of a Lifetime.

Today has been a wonderful day full of surprises and gifts.  Mother Nature finally gave us some respite from this drought and this heat.  It has been raining all afternoon and my little thermometer is reporting a temperature of 72 degrees.  It has been so unbearably hot that 72 degrees feels cold.  I am going to have to put on long pants before my Chamber of Commerce meeting in an hour.

The rain was not my only surprise today!!

The greatest gift I received today came in the mail from my sweet Aunt Gloria up in beautiful Traverse City, Michigan.  Much to my surprise, the mailman had a package for me today…a book.  In fact, a wonderful inspirational book about a woman who has journeyed from being a nun to being an innkeeper.  The book is full of wonderful prayers and inspirational thoughts.  The book is also full of yummy recipes.  I can’t wait to get my new kitchen in so I can try some of these out.

Thank You Aunt Gloria!  Your sweetness brought a smile to my heart today!

Play-cation…Jefferson Texas Style

August 5th, 2011 by carriagehouse

Caddo Lake

Ugh!  It is the dog days of Summer and the heat has gotten everyone down.  There is only one place that I want to be this time of year…in the water.  Fortunately for me (and for you), Jefferson sits right smack in the middle of two lakes.  There is plenty of water action to keep me wet and cool this incredibly hot summer.

About 20 minutes to west of Jefferson is Lake o’ the Pines with it’s open waters and beautiful Pine Tree covered hill sides.  Lake o’ the Pines is a perfect destination for boaters and fisherman alike.  After a long hot day on the water, you can enjoy one Lake o’ the Pines many beaches and swim or enjoy a romantic picnic.

About 20 minutes to east of Jefferson is the ethereal and mysterious Caddo Lake.  Covered by moss draped Bald Cypress trees, you can spend hours drifting in and out of the many bayous and sloughs on this otherworldly lake.    This location is so beautiful and unique that many different movies have been filmed here, and once you have seen this eerie swamp, you will no why.

Don’t forget that the Carriage House B&B is running a Kitchen Remodeling Special.  $79 for any room, any night.  Since the kitchen is the room that is being remodeled, we are unable to serve breakfast.   This is $60 savings over our regular rate.

Ways to Escape the Heat in Jefferson Texas

August 4th, 2011 by carriagehouse

Historic Jefferson Museum

It is miserably hot here and everywhere else in the South.  It is hard to believe that it can get this hot anywhere outside of the Sahara Desert.  This has been one of the most brutal and unforgiving summers that I have ever lived through.  Last night at 8pm, my thermometer read 104 degrees.

A photographer friend of mine keeps posting pictures that he took in last winter’s snow storms on Facebook.  I stare at them and dream of cooler and much wetter days.  My soul needs a rainy day.  So I sat down and thought of ways to cool down this weekend.  Here is my list.  Tell me whatcha think.

- Eat a Blue Bell Ice Cream store from the Jefferson General Store.  Our general store still has an old fashioned Soda Fountain so you can cool off and be nostalgic all at the same time.  If you aren’t in the mood for a cone,  how about a root beer float?  Just think how good you will sleep when you come off your sugar high.

- Take a dip at one of the many beaches at Lake o’ the Pines.   Seriously, there is no better way to cool down then by jumping in the water and Lake o’ the Pines is one of the prettiest lakes in East Texas.

- Take a ride in a go-devil on Caddo Lake.  I will even help you set this one up.  Imagine how much cooler you will feel with the wind blowing through you hair as your boat skips across the swamps and bayous.

- Spend a day in the air conditioned comfort of our many museums including the Jefferson Historical Museum.  This beautiful red brick building was built in 1890 and has been both a federal courthouse and a post office.  Today it is one of the most interesting museums in all of East Texas.

We only have a few rooms left here at the Carriage House B&B.   Don’t forget that we are running a construction special while we restore and remodel the kitchen.  $79 any room, any night, no breakfast.

Rat Poison and Dogs Don’t Mix!

July 26th, 2011 by carriagehouse

Yesterday was just pure chaos here at the Carriage House Bed and Breakfast.  I felt like a ringmaster in a three ring circus.  We had the painters on one side of the house, scrapping and prepping the wood for new paint.  We had the builder and his subs out in the breezeway.  They were demoing and roughing in my new pantry.  I was trying to do all of the final packing of the kitchen and Tom, bless his heart, was trying very hard to find a quiet place to work.

In the middle of the chaos, the pest control  lady shows up for our monthly service.  Now I know I am always pointing at The Bug and saying we need to get the pest control company out to deal with our Bug problem, but seriously, I was just kidding.  I adore the little puppy even if she does go out of her way to bug me and drive me crazy.  And drive me crazy she does.  As I am writing she is trying to pull the sheets off of the bed.

Now a dear friend of ours who is a Master Gardener diagnosed my yard yesterday morning as having grubs and ants.  This makes sense since we are the only ones on our block watering.  Everyone else has decided to let their yards die and everything (critters and bugs) is looking for water right now in this drought.  So when the pest control lady came by, I asked her if she could treat the grass for bugs.

She had her hands full of rat poison blocks to refill our stations and so she had to put them down to look at her schedule.  Dixie gingerly grabbed one of the rat poison blocks off of the table and ran into the yard where she started eating it.  Bug went nuts trying to scoop up all of the crumbs and pick up the pieces that Dixie dropped.  Both the Pest Control lady and I dove to grab all of the poison from the dogs and keep them from eating any more then they already had.

The Pest Control Lady called her boss to see if the girls needed to go to the vet but I wasn’t waiting around for an answer.  I put them both on their leashes and rushed them to the Dr.

The good news is that we got them both to the vet in time.  Doc gave them both some medicine to make them throw up and started them on Vitamin K, which I keep calling Special K for some reason.  He is hopeful that none of the poison even made it into their system.  Certainly they are acting like themselves.  Dixie, being an older lady, is just laying around and supervising the work and The Bug is looking for mischief and trouble (which she undoubtedly will find).
