Christmas Rail of Lights

Step back in time as the Historic Jefferson Railway, an antique narrow-gauge train, embraces an old-fashioned Christmas in the country. Enjoy the lighted vignettes and hear the story of “Celebrations Around the World” aboard the train that circles the Piney Woods along the Big Cypress Bayou. The decorated historic railroad depot captures the holiday spirit complete with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The Christmas Train opens on November 28, 2013 and runs Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday through December 22, 2013. (Closed December 1st).

Also, ring in the New Year with the Rail of Lights New Year’s Train running December 26-29 and the 31st. This ride will feature the dropping of the ball in Times Square, complete with beverages, noisemakers and a fantastic fireworks show on every train ride.

New Christmas Coffee Mugs are Here

December 17th, 2012 by carriagehouse

Christmas Coffee Mugs

Finally the new Christmas Mugs are here!!!

Although they are a month late, 2 of our 4 Christmas colors are here just in time to make Christmas presents.  I have a beautiful Plum with a Lilac top and a Forest Green with a Dijon top in a tankard style mug available and ready to ship.

All of these mugs are hand thrown by a potter at Deneen Pottery in Minnesota. In a world where all of our manufacturing is outsourced to China, this is a American craftsmanship at it’s absolute finest.  These even feel better in your hand then a cheap Chinese mass produced coffee mug.

Our coffee mugs sell for $18 a piece ($19.48 w/ tax) plus shipping.  Call me at 903-665-9511, if you would like to purchase one.

The Old Fashion Christmas Parade in Jefferson Texas

December 16th, 2012 by carriagehouse

Santa Claus

Santa and I waiting for the parade to start.

Christmas is one of my favorite times of year in Jefferson.  Every weekend there is something new going on to celebrate the season.  The first two weekend’s of the year are always the Candlelight Tour of Homes and the Christmas Carols at the local churches.  The Rail of Lights Steam Train goes on every weekend from Thanksgiving to New Years.  The Enchanted Forest with a hundred decorated and lit Christmas Trees in Lions Park is sure to put even Scrooge in the Christmas Spirit but my favorite event of the year is the Old Fashioned Christmas Parade which wanders through the streets of Jefferson the third Saturday of December.

This year, I was promoted to Chief Elf and got to ride on top of the fire truck with Santa Claus throwing candy out at the Kids.  I had so much fun and hope I get to keep my position next year even though I will be off the Marion County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Enjoy this little video I put together of our Santa having a little fun while waiting for the parade to start.  I hope it brings a smile to your face and some Christmas Spirit to your day.

The New Year’s Eve Door Prize…Whose raffle ticket is it?

January 3rd, 2012 by carriagehouse

Terry Ward

Guest Blog by Tom Lester

Happy New Year and Takk for Sist!!  May 2012 be prosperous beyond even your financial accomplishments.

I am not going to break away from the norm so I am once again going to brag about the terrific town of Jefferson .  There are so many parties and venues in and about Jefferson on New Year’s Eve, and we always find it difficult to choose how  to spend our last night of the year. There have been days when we’d been inebriated ad nauseam at a bull riding competition and days when we spent it in a farmhouse.

For the second year in a row my wife, Stephanie, and I attended the New Year’s Eve Gala at the Jefferson Carnegie Library.  It was a magical night of great music, dancing and friendship.  This is definitely one of the most enjoyable opportunities to see your friends and to meet new ones while bringing in the New Year.

The door prizes were excellent as well. Which brings me to the raffle and the question of the night…whose raffle ticket is it?

As part of the admission fee, everyone receives a raffle ticket. Two admission fees per couple so therefore two raffle tickets per couple. These raffle tickets potentially could win you fabulous prizes donated by local businesses.

When the first raffle number of the night was pulled, one of our two numbers was called.  Of course, immediately Stephanie claims it as hers. I have no idea how she thought that specific one was hers, the tickets were still attached together.  I had been eyeing all night a cask strength single malt scotch, donated by Tony and Marsha Jones. Stephanie, with HER ticket, saunters up to the to the prize table and informs me that my number had not been called yet.  Since we were the first chosen, we had first pick of the prizes.  She took the bottle from my cold dead hand, places it back on the table and chooses the original drawing by Terry Ward, a local accomplished artist.

She informs me the scotch will be drank within a very short period of time.  I agreed whole heartily with that statement.  However she informed me that Terry’s art work is one of a kind, dear to our hearts, and will be with us forever.  I love Terry,  but, FOREVER??  I guess it was Stephanie’s ticket after all and I gladly allowed her to pick the print by Terry Ward. Thank You Terry for your generosity and contributions to the Jefferson Carnegie Library and to the City of Jefferson.

BTW,  I’m  good friends with the person that won the scotch.Carnegie Library

Rail of Lights New Year’s Train – Jefferson, Texas

Blast into the New Year aboard the Rail of Lights New Year’s Train in Jefferson, Texas. The unforgettable ride on an old-fashioned steam train departs December 30th at 7 and 8 and on December 31st, New Year’s Eve, at 8:30, 9:30 and 11:30. Passengers will enjoy lighted scenes along the Cypress Bayou River as they hear the tale of New Year’s traditions, customs and superstitions.

The patrons will receive New Year’s hats and noisemakers. Each train will include a simulation of the New Year’s Eve Ball dropping in Times Square followed by a fantastic fire works show.

Hear about the unique New Year’s customs across the United States, including stories of the Good Luck Dragon in Oriental, North Carolina; Christkindl Market in Akron, Ohio; the Live Toy Soldier drum and light show in Bellevue, Washington; and Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

Children and adults alike will be awed by the historic railroad depot decked out with gingerbread house theme. The wonderful narrated tour will also give our patrons an opportunity to sing some of their favorite New Year’s songs as they discover the joy of New Years along the river.

Plan to stay the weekend in the Cypress Bayou RV Park, just one mile from Jefferson, and watch all of the fireworks as the train comes through the park. Ask about our holiday get-away pricing of $15 per night.

Ticket Prices: First Class $21; Coach Class: Adults $16.50; Lap children under 4 are free. First Class is offered in a beautiful historic, enclosed coach. If you are riding Coach Class, be sure to dress warmly and bring a blanket as you will be riding in open cars. Seats are limited, so purchase your tickets early.

Jefferson is nestled deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas and seems frozen in time. It is a charming town and an elegant reminder of a bygone era. The downtown area will be aglow with lights and greenery during the holiday season. There are over a hundred buildings in the city with historical markers. Many historic homes offer bed and breakfast accommodations. Dozens of other historic buildings house museums, craft and antique shops and restaurants.

There is a nice rhythm to life here in Jefferson.   Life is predictable and comfortable.   For instance, you know that if it is the day after Thanksgiving all the town’s folk are going to gather around the gazebo at Lions Park and light the Enchanted Forest.  That is why Friday night, I joined my friends and neighbors for the traditional kick off of the Christmas Season in Jefferson in Lions Park.

Every year the Historic Jefferson Foundation sells over a hundred Christmas trees to local businesses and townsfolk.  These beautiful trees are all decorated and lit for the enjoyment of all in the Enchanted Forest in Lions Park. Lighting all around with the help of local contractors, it is quite a spectacle to see that many lit Christmas Trees in one place decorated and twinkling in all of their glory.  Just the very sight of all of these trees will turn any Scrooge into a Christmas Elf.

We all gather at dusk at Lions Park for the official Tree Lighting ceremony.  Trees are lighted with the Vonn that Jesus Christ is the light of the world. Carols are sung, poems are read, and excerpts from plays are acted out.  It is a jouyous and cozy celebration of Christmas in a small town.  Everyone knows everyone and we all wish each other a Merry Christmas.  If you have never made it to Jefferson during the holidays, then you are missing a wonderful small town (think Norman Rockwell) Christmas.

Here are the pictures from this year’s event.  Enjoy!
