Now All I need Are Some Bats for My New House

February 4th, 2012 by carriagehouse

Bat House

One of the challenges you have when you live in the swamps and wetlands of East Texas are Mosquitoes.  We grow ’em big here and when when they bite, you know it.  It is a shame too!  So many pretty nights our guests here at the Carriage House Bed and Breakfast have been ran back inside from the pests.

We have tried everything to combat them.  After looking on a pest extermination vaughan site we burned citronella candles.  We ran the little Off fans and finally we just started putting cans of bug spray around the property for the guests to use.  Nothing says a romantic evening, then the smell of DEET.

So last summer, I began a campaign to get a bat house.

According to pest control appleton wi there are 32 native species of bats here in Texas, and as we all know, they LOVE to eat mosquitoes.  In fact, the Little Brown Bat can eat between 500 and 1000 mosquitos an HOUR!!

So for Christmas, Santa brought me a bat house and today Santa put it up for me.  It is outside the Ruth Lester room in the Garden Courtyard.  We positioned it in a place where the bats would be happy roosting and our guests can watch them at dusk.

So, now all I need are some bats.

Like everyone else, we have a project list about a mile long.

One of our many projects is to get some awesome breakfast photos for our website.  So I commissioned my favorite photographer, Tom, and we had a photo shoot this morning right after breakfast.  The Pasta Frittata was colorful and really did photograph well!  As is not unusual for us, we were  quickly distracted by cleaning and giving directions to the guests.  When we walked back into the kitchen we had a surprise.  The plate had been licked clean and The Bug was looking very guilty!!

Port of Jefferson Riverfront Restoration Project Has Begun!!

Port of Jefferson Boat RampTrees

I was so excited to hear the news this week that the highly anticipated Port of Jefferson Riverfront Project had begun this week.  The heavy equipment was delivered on Wednesday and work began in earnest on Thursday.  Woo Hoo!

This project has been in the works for decades and is something that we have needed for generations.  The Big Cypress Bayou area has been altered and degraded from hundreds of year’s of boats and man’s influence. Many of the native species of plants  have died out and native animals no longer come to the shores of the water or are even in this area.  This project will return this wetland back to it’s original state and re-introduce many of the trees, plants, animals, and fish that once populated this unique swampy area of Texas.  The Army Corps of Engineer’s estimate the entire project to take anywhere from 18 months to 2 year to complete.

For more information about this project, please visit the project website at http://portjeffersonrestoration.com/.

Please enjoy this video of the first day’s work.  The first work effort of the project is to move the current boat ramp (located at the Polk St bridge) down Austin Street right next to the Historic Jefferson Railway depot.

I hope you enjoy this update!  I will be making more as the project moves forward and milestones are achieved.

The New Year’s Eve Door Prize…Whose raffle ticket is it?

Guest Blog by Tom Lester

Happy New Year and Takk for Sist!!  May 2012 be prosperous beyond even your financial accomplishments.

I am not going to break away from the norm so I am once again going to brag about the terrific town of Jefferson .  There are so many parties and venues in and about Jefferson on New Year’s Eve, and we always find it difficult to choose how  to spend our last night of the year. There have been days when we’d been inebriated ad nauseam at a bull riding competition and days when we spent it in a farmhouse.

For the second year in a row my wife, Stephanie, and I attended the New Year’s Eve Gala at the Jefferson Carnegie Library.  It was a magical night of great music, dancing and friendship.  This is definitely one of the most enjoyable opportunities to see your friends and to meet new ones while bringing in the New Year.

The door prizes were excellent as well. Which brings me to the raffle and the question of the night…whose raffle ticket is it?

As part of the admission fee, everyone receives a raffle ticket. Two admission fees per couple so therefore two raffle tickets per couple. These raffle tickets potentially could win you fabulous prizes donated by local businesses.

When the first raffle number of the night was pulled, one of our two numbers was called.  Of course, immediately Stephanie claims it as hers. I have no idea how she thought that specific one was hers, the tickets were still attached together.  I had been eyeing all night a cask strength single malt scotch, donated by Tony and Marsha Jones. Stephanie, with HER ticket, saunters up to the to the prize table and informs me that my number had not been called yet.  Since we were the first chosen, we had first pick of the prizes.  She took the bottle from my cold dead hand, places it back on the table and chooses the original drawing by Terry Ward, a local accomplished artist.

She informs me the scotch will be drank within a very short period of time.  I agreed whole heartily with that statement.  However she informed me that Terry’s art work is one of a kind, dear to our hearts, and will be with us forever.  I love Terry,  but, FOREVER??  I guess it was Stephanie’s ticket after all and I gladly allowed her to pick the print by Terry Ward. Thank You Terry for your generosity and contributions to the Jefferson Carnegie Library and to the City of Jefferson.

BTW,  I’m  good friends with the person that won the scotch.Carnegie Library

 JEFFERSON’S OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTMAS PARADE

 MONDAY, DECEMBER 5, 6:00 P.M.

Jefferson’s Annual Christmas Parade will take one back to a simpler and more idyllic time Monday, December 5 at 6:00 p.m.

Lighted floats depicting nativity scenes, carolers, and bands are but a sample of the things to see. The evening’s special guest, Santa Claus, atop a fire truck will be making a list and checking it twice.

“Some of our guests said this was very touching as it evoked childhood memories of long ago”, Juanita Wakefield Chitwood, Executive Director, Marion County Chamber of Commerce.

Originating at Lion’s Park, the parades will weave its way along Henderson, Market, Austin, Polk and finish at Brookshire’s along Broadway.

Join in on the fun as we celebrate Christmas as it was many years ago.

House of the Seasons

The House of the Seasons

Written by: Richard Collins, T.J. Kuenster, and Dan Kuenster

Illustrated by: Dan Kuenster

Published by: House of the Seasons

Sale price: $10.95

www.houseoftheseasons.com

The House of the Seasons is pleased to announce the publication of its first historical photographic illustrated novel, The House of the Seasons. The novel was co-authored by Richard Collins, Dan Kuenster, and T.J. Kuenster.

Richard Collins, a Texas entrepreneur, is president of the House of the Seasons and CEO of istation, an interactive education company in Dallas. Dan Kuenster is an Emmy-award winning animator and the Executive Vice President of Art and Animation at istation. T. J. Kuenster is the Musical Director of the Glen Campbell Band and is a well-known songwriter. His credits include original songs on the soundtracks for the Don Bluth animated films All Dogs Go to Heaven and Rockadoodle.

The House of the Seasons centers around Jeannie Epperson, the daughter of the home’s builder, Benjamin Epperson, a prominent lawyer, entrepreneur, railroad man, and political leader.

The novel tells the haunting story of Jeannie’s childhood and her friendship with a ghost during the time of the Civil War. Soon after Jeannie’s birth, her mother dies. Jeannie’s Aunt Agatha, an old maid of twenty-four, comes to take care of the child. An old friend, Texas Ranger Edward Hamilton, leaves the Rangers to work for Mr. Epperson and falls in love with Agatha. The Civil War brings tragedy to the family, and it changes their lives.

The story is based on historical facts and characters. It weaves together several true events from the history of the home. One of the important characters in the book is Sadie, Jeannie’s cat, her loyal friend and companion. Sadie lives at the House of the Seasons today and is beloved by all the guests who visit the home.

The House of the Seasons is a wonderful story for children of all ages from 6 to 86. The authors will be in Jefferson the last two weekends in October to sign first editions of the novel. The book is on sale at Beauty and the Book, the House of the Seasons, and several locations around Jefferson, for $10.95.
